Youth4Peace Dialogue in Somali Region

On 2nd August, a dialogue organized by FES Ethiopia in partnership with Ybuntu brought together young people in Jigjiga, Somali Region, to discuss priorities for peace and inclusive development.

The Youth4Peace & Inclusive Development event acted as an important platform for diverse youth voices to share their perspectives on regional challenges and solutions. Participants emphasized several key areas that require urgent attention to foster lasting peace and socio-economic transformation.

Youth Priorities for Change

The call for institutionalizing youth participation to ensure their voices shape policies and peacebuilding efforts in the region was clear. Expanding access to jobs, skills development, and entrepreneurship opportunities emerged as critical for economic empowerment. They also highlighted the need to combat social exclusion, tribalism, and inequalities that hinder cohesive community growth.

Mental health and psychological support services were underlined as crucial but often overlooked components of well-being for young people. Strengthening civic education and leadership capacity was seen as vital to build a generation capable of fostering inclusive governance and sustainable development.

A Clear Vision

The young people voiced a strong belief in their potential to drive peacebuilding, prosperity, and transformation in Ethiopia. They urged policymakers and stakeholders to recognize youth as key partners in the region’s future and to provide meaningful platforms for their engagement.
