International Women’s Day: Negarit Screening and Marketplace Event

In commemoration of International Women’s Day, Setaweet Movement, in partnership with FES Ethiopia, organised a screening of Negarit. The screening brought together community members, civil‑society organisations, development partners and activists to reflect on the realities faced by women living in conflict‑affected regions.

Named after the Amharic term “ነጋሪት”, a traditional drum used to announce important messages to the public, Negarit is a documentary that centres on the voices of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) survivors from the Amhara, Benishangul-Gumuz, and Somali regions. Through personal testimonies, the film illuminates the lived realities of women and girls who have endured conflict-related violence. Many of these stories also speak to broader human rights violations experienced in conflict settings, including rape, arbitrary arrest, and forced displacement. The testimonies further highlight the challenges faced by internally displaced persons (IDPs), including insecurity, trauma, and limited access to essential resources.

The marketplace exhibition featured Setaweet Movement’s key publications and training materials, such as the Negarit publication, a gender‑training manual and a trauma‑healing guide. These resources illustrate the ongoing efforts to promote gender‑sensitive approaches and psychosocial support in the regions most affected by conflict.

As the world continues to celebrate International Women’s Day, platforms like this underscore the importance of amplifying women’s voices through storytelling and truth-telling. By bringing these narratives to a public platform, the film champions resilience, calls for accountability and charts a path toward healing, equality and sustainable peace.
