Hawassa University Policy Forum on "Reconfiguration of the Federal Structure in SNNP: Implications for the Federal Arrangement"

Ethiopia in recent years has seen a heightened demand by ethno-linguistic groups for additional autonomy and self-administration.

In legal terms this has manifested itself, among other areas, in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ (SNNP) Regional State. Sidama’s bid to attain the status of a regional state through a referendum has been successful, and another bid for a referendum for the South-West Region was scheduled to be held in conjunction with the 2021 elections. These referendums and demands have created some new facts, but also challenges within the federal arrangement. The policy forum therefore analyzed possible implications of the unfolding reality to the long-existing federal arrangement and assessed possible trajectories in the country’s bid for coexistence, peace, and development.

Renowned experts in the fields of federalism, local governance and political history as well as representatives of the Sidama and SNNP regional states participated in the event.
