Driving Just Transition through Social Dialogue in the Coffee and Horticulture Sector in Ethiopia - Bahir Dar

On 13 February 2025, FES Ethiopia and CETU wrapped up a successful training for workers from the coffee and horticulture sectors on “Just Transition” and “Driving Just Transition through Social Dialogue” in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

The training aimed to raise awareness about Just Transition and related issues while fostering a discussion among participants on the impact of climate change on their work. It also encouraged dialogue on their involvement in social dialogue, best practices, challenges, and opportunities in implementing sustainable practices, as well as strategies for advancing Just Transition at their workplace through social dialogue.

One of the most pressing issues highlighted during the workshop was how climate change impacts the coffee and horticulture sectors, specifically extreme temperatures and unpredictable rain leading to reduced crop yields, increased workloads, and exposure to harsh environmental conditions. Participants also mentioned their concerns about exposure to harmful chemicals and pesticides, often in hot weather conditions, which can lead to serious health issues.

Despite these difficulties, workers expressed how social dialogue has helped them until now to articulate their issues and negotiate with their employers and government to protect their rights and improve their working conditions. Linking back to the Just Transition Framework, the training highlighted how its proper implementation will help workers in securing their rights and at the same time protect the environment.
