Climate Change Induced Human Insecurities in the Horn of Africa: Current Challenges and Policy Options
On 26 September 2023, FES organized a roundtable discussion on the topic of "Climate Change Induced Human Insecurities in the Horn of Africa: Current Challenges and Policy Options". The discussion brought together climate change advocates, professionals, researchers and experts from different embassies and civil societies.
The roundtable discussion included two case studies from Southern Ethiopia/Kenia and Somali Region/Somalia, examining climate-security interlinkages and peace agreement considerations. Participants discussed the complex relationship between climate change and conflict in the Horn of Africa, emphasizing the need to address root causes like poverty, inequality, and social injustice with adequate policies. The adoption of inclusive approaches and strengthen regional cooperation on climate change and conflict prevention were also mentioned to address the challenges.
Further discussions on the climate and security nexus were promised by FES which also announced an upcoming study and evaluation on climate policy frameworks in the Sahel and Horn of Africa region.
