Change starts with Representation: Advancing Gender Equality in Ethiopia’s Trade Unions

In a significant step toward promoting gender equality in the world of work, FES Ethiopia and the Confederation of Ethiopian Trade Unions (CETU) organized a series of workshops in Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa. These sessions centered on CETU’s newly developed Gender Policy and were designed to strengthen the capacity of union leaders and Women’s Committee representatives across various sectors.

The workshops served as an important platform to raise awareness about the key elements of the Gender Policy. Participants were introduced to the policy's core components to ensure that all stakeholders, especially union leadership are well-informed and aligned on its implementation. This is essential for translating policy into practice across the trade union landscape.

One of the central themes discussed during the sessions was the importance of establishing and empowering Women’s Committees within trade unions. These committees are envisioned as key structures for ensuring that the voices of women workers are heard, represented, and acted upon within union decision-making processes. By formalizing and strengthening these committees, unions can take concrete steps toward more inclusive and equitable representation.

Another critical focus of the workshop was the integration of women worker representatives during the negotiation process for Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs). Participants explored how the inclusion of gender perspectives in collective bargaining discussions can lead to more responsive and equitable labor agreements. This approach recognizes that negotiating for better wages and conditions must also address the specific needs and challenges faced by women in the workplace.

Participants also had candid reflections on the current realities faced by women workers in Ethiopia. From limited access to leadership roles to persistent workplace discrimination, the discussions highlighted both the progress made and the challenges that remain. These conversations underscored the importance of continued advocacy, education, and structural change.

Ultimately, the workshops emphasized that achieving gender equality in the labor movement requires more than policies it requires active representation, institutional commitment, and persistent effort. By prioritizing the inclusion of women in union leadership and negotiations, FES Ethiopia and CETU are setting a foundation for a more just and equitable labor environment.

As the trade union movement continues to evolve, initiatives like this are crucial in ensuring that women workers are not only protected but also empowered to lead and shape the future of work in Ethiopia.
