Celebrating Century of Impact, A Legacy of Partnership!

FES Ethiopia celebrated two remarkable milestones: 100 years of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and 120 years of diplomatic relations between Germany and Ethiopia.

Born on 4 February 1871, Friedrich Ebert rose from humble beginnings as a worker and trade unionist to become a statesman and first democratically elected president of Germany who deeply believed in the bond between democracy, freedom, justice, and solidarity. Before his passing in 1925, Ebert ensured that his vision for a just society would live on by providing funds for the foundation of FES, an organization dedicated to promoting social democracy. 

For a century, FES has collaborated with labor movements, civil society, and progressive leaders to make democracy not just a concept but a reality for all. From empowering young leaders and strengthening social dialogue to advancing research, education, and inclusive development, FES has been a partner in building societies where fairness and solidarity thrive.

Since 1905, Germany and Ethiopia have built a strong partnership grounded in mutual respect, development cooperation, and cultural exchange. FES Ethiopia has been honoured to contribute to this journey for more than 30 years by advocating for social democracy, democratic participation, gender equality, climate justice, and sustainable development in Ethiopia and beyond.

We commemorated this history, reflecting on the profound impact of FES in Ethiopia and the enduring bond between Germany and Ethiopia with our colleagues, partners, diplomats, and friends who have walked this path with us, reflecting on a legacy of cooperation and looking ahead to a future shaped by mutual respect and shared values.
