FES Ethiopia, the German Development Institute (GDI-DIE) and the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam organized a hybrid workshop on May 11th to present existing evidence on how the Ethiopian government has piloted and scaled-up Community-Based Health Insurance (CBHI) for the informal sector since 2010 and the establishment of Social Health Insurance (SHI) for formal sector workers as means of achieving UHC making it one the largest health insurance schemes in Africa.
The workshop featured presentations and a panel discussion with representatives from MoH, CBHI, Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) and the World Bank on lessons learned and opportunities through the COVID-19 pandemic concerning structural UHC and social protection policies by giving first-hand insights into current studies using novel data from Ethiopia and discussion on implications for policy approaches to allow for strengthening of health systems and work towards UHC in the future.
