The Conflict in Sudan and its Geopolitical Impacts on the Horn of Africa

On 22 June 2023, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Ethiopia and the Institute of Peace and Security Studies hosted a Breakfast Meeting on “The Conflict in Sudan and its Geopolitical Impacts on the Horn of Africa“. Renowned experts in peace and security, as well as current and previous Ambassadors and officials, took part and contributed their insights.
For now, the conflict remains national, but the involvement of out-of-state actors has already been reported. The ongoing conflict is not containable and poses a risk to the neighboring countries, many of which find themselves in volatile security situations already. The reluctance of international and regional actors to clearly position themselves and condemn the human rights violations has been harshly criticized. Furthermore, the participants elucidated that any efforts excluding Sudanese civilian voices will be neither legitimate nor successful in the long run. However, civil participation should also be broad and not be tokenized. Therefore, Sudanese experts stressed the need for a broad civilian platform to resolve the conflict and create a lasting peace.
Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Ethiopia and the Institute for Peace and Security Studies look forward to the next Breakfast Meeting and extend their heartfelt gratitude to all participants!
