Inflation in Ethiopia and the Somali Region
On 11 March 2023 FES and EEA together with Jigjiga University organised a panel discussion on the inflation in Ethiopia and its effects in the Somali Region. Ato Mustafe Muhamed, President of the Somali Region opend the event and also took part in the discussion with comments to the ongoing political interventions in the Somali Region. On the panel it was mentioned that the inflation in Ethiopia has different root causes on the demand and supply side, but that external reasons, like the war in Ukraine and the Covid 19 pandemic, have also triggered the high inflation. Mustafe Muhamed mentioned political interventions for poorer people extremly affected by the high food prices but he also emphasized that some economic challenges in Ethiopia demand not only an economic but a political solution. The conference participants consisted of students and lecturers from Jigjiga University as well as political authorities from Somali Region and civil society organisations.
