Bahir Dar University Discussion Forum on Minority Rights in Ethiopia

Minority rights and its legal and practical application in Ethiopia has for long remained a point of discussion as well as contention among policy makers and scholars.

The existing constitutional arrangement at federal and regional levels provide mixed interpretations on the matter. Within the context of the ongoing reform initiatives in Ethiopia in the previous three years, though, the need to address the thorny minority rights issue has assumed center stage. FES, in partnership with Bahir Dar University, therefore organized a workshop on the matter so that representatives from the regional administration, local communities and regional government institutions, together with members of the university’s community, could jointly deliberate on the state of minority rights in contemporary Ethiopia.
