Program Manager / Senior Policy Advisor

FES promotes the values of Social Democracy, together with partners around the world. On the African continent, FES has been working for social justice, democracy, peace and international solidarity for over 40 years. It has encouraged and nurtured political exchange between Africa, Germany and Europe for many years, acting as a partner to political parties, parliaments, trade unions, media, civil society groups and the interested public.

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Ethiopia, Addis Ababa office, was established in 1992. Since then, it has been actively supporting the process of political, social, and economic development and transformation in the country. In its almost three decades of experience in Ethiopia, FES has established strong partnerships with non-governmental organizations, trade unions, civil society organization, Think Tanks, universities, government institutions and the Ethiopian Parliament.

Main responsibilities and requirements:

  • Good understanding and appreciation of Social Democratic values
  • Conceptualize, plan, organize, monitor, evaluate and further develop activities in line with the FES project outline, e.g. through high-level workshops, seminars, studies, public events and conferences in cooperation with different partner organisations or partner networks; this includes the preparation of concept papers and the completion of activity reports according to FES standards as well as preparation of Terms of Reference for research activities and consultancies.
  • Consult, prepare background information or policy briefings on political, social and economic developments.
  • Build, maintain and continuously improve both FES and individual networks with policy makers, government institutions, strategic partners and think tanks on topics relevant to the work of FES.
  • Actively assesses, propose and deepen strategic partnerships with existing or potentially new partners and opportunities for cooperation with FES.
  • Design innovative approaches and formats for activities and moderate events in cooperation with partners in particular on political and social developments in Ethiopia and different kinds of related policies or policy proposals.
  • Maintain regular/periodic communication with other FES offices/programmes on the continent and across the globe.
  • Willingness to travel in Ethiopia and internationally and to work on selected weekends.

Qualifications required:

  • University MA or PhD in Social or Political Science or related fields, keen interest in Ethiopian politics, foreign policy related issues as well as in economic and political transformation
  • At least 5 years of professional experience as project manager, policy advisor and/or in an expert position in a government or international or civil-society organization
  • A good understanding and proven professional expertise in at least two defined policy areas of importance to the work of FES Ethiopia as well as a profound knowledge of the political system of Ethiopia
  • Excellent control of Microsoft Office (Word, Excell, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.

Social, special and other skills:

  • Strong ability to work within a team
  • Ability to work independently and responsibly
  • Very good and professional communication skills both orally and written
  • Experience in moderation and public presentation and speech
  • Proven experience in writing policy papers and / or policy briefs
  • Experience to proactively use social media in the professional context.

Internship

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Ethiopia offers internships to Ethiopian, German and other students and recent graduates who are interested in learning about the work of a political foundation and have an affinity to our working lines.

Interns will have the opportunity to learn about and participate in the process of designing and organizing policy dialogue activities, conduct rapid and practical research on issues and working lines, acquire skills in coordinating and organizing events, and analyze public policy issues. Interns may also have space for the development of their own ideas, and may even carry out a separate (e.g. thesis) project, as long as the project and ideas fit within the thematic axes of the foundation.

The intern may propose the duration of the internship, according to the following criteria:

  • The minimum duration of an internship is 3 months.
  • The maximum duration is 6 months.

Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate competently in English (orally and in writing).
  • Final year undergraduate or master's degree students in economics, sociology, political science, communication or related fields.
  • Professionals who have recently graduated and are looking to broaden their professional experience.

Program/Seminar Assistant

Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Addis Ababa Office (FES), invites adequately qualified and motivated applicants to apply for the position as a Program/Seminar Assistant.

Job Description:

The Program/Seminar Assistant should have a great interest in event management, e.g. preparation and organization of events with external service providers and FES’s partners in cooperation with the FES’s program managers. The Program/Seminar Assistant provides outstanding service to participants, is professional, friendly and polite in its communication with partners and service providers. We are looking for an experienced persons with ability to manage administration and event logistics for Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Ethiopia who can anticipate project needs, manages work priorities, meets deadlines and works with little need of supervision.

Main responsibilities:

  • Take responsibility for the professional organizational planning and implementation of conferences, seminars, workshops, and delegation visits (incoming and outgoing) of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung.
  • Arrangement of service providers, amongst other things transport, hotels, catering, translation, photographers, video recording or live-streaming agencies.
  • Support the process of editing, lay-outing, and printing of publications done by Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation Ethiopia.
  • Support the editing, development and actualization of the FES-Ethiopia Website and related social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter).
  • Support the procurement of partner and/or event-related services and/or materials.
  • Support Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Ethiopia office in building, maintaining and continuously improving networks with service providers which will contribute to the high quality of the work of FES.

Qualifications required:

  • Professional experience of at least 3 years in event management, as project/seminar assistant or with duties related to the position.
  • Professional degree in management, event management, project management or related fields.
  • Fluency in both oral and written English and Amharic; knowledge of other national or international languages is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing, proof reading skills, and speaking.
  • Experience in dealing with a wide range of service providers including hotels, catering, translations services, graphic design services etc.
  • Excellent control of Microsoft Office and Typo 3 knowledge for the handling of FES’s Website

  • Proven experience in event management, procurement, and office management.
